The cautious little burro was often the only animal that could negotiate the narrow, steep mountain trails to the gold mines on the high slopes of the Rocky Mountains. A string of twenty or more burros would be loaded with supplies and then driven or led up familiar trails. Their cargo included the timbers used to build the mine shafts. These timbers would initially be cut longer than needed, so the ends dragging along the trial could be cut off at the mine.
