“The Burro Brigade”

oil on linen

On July 20, 1919 Mancos, Colorado hosted a “BurroFest.” The event began with a short race and finished with the burros modeling for artists. Burros have been a major source of inspiration for me since the 1970’s and they attracted a large crowd, including a high school friend and excellent photographer, Basil Katsaros. Basil gave me use of all his photos. I removed
the human racers and the tack from each burro, and selected 7 of the competitors to create “The Burro Brigade.”

Ziggy, Silverjack, Bella, Lillie Mae, DonKey, Arlo, and Gaspard
