June 2012, a wild fire came within 1 1/2 miles of our home in Mancos, Colorado. No structures were lost, however, 10,000 acres of prime lion, bobcat, and bear habitat were destroyed. I painted the fire from the driveway, concerned about the well-being of the animals. All I could find online regarding the movement of wildlife during and after fires, was a warning to beware of “displaced” wildlife. I chose to portray the animal point of view as not much different than that of humans, seeking high places to track the fire’s movement.
