There is a herd of wild horses about a two hour drive north of my home in Southwestern Colorado.   Somehow they manage to survive in Disappointment Valley, so aptly named for its desolate and barren landscape.  During the spring of 2007, I joined several friends and we rode our own horses  in the valley looking for the wild herds.  We had several encounters with bachelor stallions and entire bands of wild horses. The seed of an idea for a sculpture of a stallion in a dust storm was planted on that trip.  The photo image of a rearing, dancing stallion by Claude Steeleman provided the final nudge to create “Dust Devil.”
