Dogs have been in partnership with man for at least 12,000 years.  Before the horse, it was dog that hauled loads on their backs or pulled necessities behind them on sledges or a travois.

Tractors and cars put working horses out to pasture and the snow machine almost caused the disappearance of the sled dog.

The heritage of the sled dog was rescued, however, as the necessity of hauling evolved into the sport of racing.  In the past five decades, the sled dog has evolved into a shorter coated, longer legged dog with the endurance to not only run long distances, but to do so while pulling a load in severe weather conditions.

This supreme athlete, the Alaskan Husky, is the dog you see running the famous Iditarod.
