“On the Backs of Burros, Bringing Civilization to Colorado” by P. David Smith and Lyn Bezek, opened my eyes to the importance of the noble little burro to the settling of the American West. The historical photos often portray dozens of burros packed with every imaginable item, trudging up and down narrow mountain trails without so much as a halter and lead rope. I have sculpted and painted burros throughout my career, but I am now focusing on the partnership that these sturdy little equines have had with people.
