The red fox is a true omnivore and its diet ranges from insects, rodents, small birds and mammals to a wide variety of plants including grasses, seeds, and fruit.  Individual foxes, like humans, have food preferences. Apple orchards are a major food source for foxes each fall.  Foxes will take more than they can eat and store the excess for the future.  They dig a hole, deposit the apple and then use their noses to push the dirt back over the apple.
